The world's tallest tower, the Tokyo Skytree, was to officially open Tuesday in the Japanese capital, and 200,000 visitors were expected on the first day.

The 634-metre broadcast tower, located in the eastern part of Tokyo, has two observation decks at 350 metres and at 450 metres, which provide visitors with 360-degree views of the capital and its surrounding areas.

About 8,000 people were expected to be the first to experience the panorama Tuesday, according to the operator, Tobu Tower Skytree Co.

Tokyo Skytree was certified in November by Guinness World Records as the world's tallest tower. The new skyscraper for digital terrestrial broadcasting surpassed in March the height of China's Canton Tower, a 600-metre broadcasting and sightseeing tower.

Guinness named the 828-metre Burj Khalifa in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates as the world's tallest structure.

The operator expected 25 million people to visit the tower and the adjacent shopping complex annually, giving a boost to the area's economy.
