Protest begins against Petronas’ RM60b Pengerang project

PENGERANG, Sept 30 — The sleepy hollow of Kampung Sungai Rengit came alive this morning with animated chants and blares from portable air horns as green-clad protesters streamed in by the bus loads to rally against a RM60 billion petrochemical project that will see thousands of villagers lose their homes and livelihoods.  The highly-anticipated Himpunan Hijau Pengerang Lestari protest kicked off peacefully to a bright and early start despite earlier fears of possible police blockades to prevent protesters from attending the mass rally.
From 25 different locations across the country, including the east Malaysian state of Sabah, rally participants arrived from 9am onwards, all dressed in Himpunan Hijau’s signature neon green T-shirts and bearing banners that detailed the rally’s three protests — to protest the land grab, to protest the loss of livelihood, and to protest environmental destruction.
As at 10am, the small village square where the township’s landmark steel lobster structure is located was flooded by nearly a thousand protesters.
The atmosphere was peaceful and almost carnival-like with some rally-goers erecting small booths to sell items like T-shirts, umbrellas, face masks and light snacks, while only a handful of police personnel were seen keeping an eye on the cheerful rally participants.
Seen among the crowd were known Pakatan Rakyat (PR) leaders like PAS vice-president Salahuddin Ayub and Johor DAP chief Dr Boo Cheng Hau, as well as Bersih 2.0 steering committee members Wong Chin Huat and Hishammuddin Rais, who was the emcee for the event.
The vocal activist, Hishammuddin spurred the crowd on by teaching them cheering signals and a song “Suara Rakyat” (voice of the people), which was sung along to the tune of the famous American folk ballad “Oh my darling Clementine”.
Banners and placards condemning Petronas’ Refinery and Petrochemicals Development (RAPID) project, which will see the relocation of over 3,000 people from seven villages girdling the shore of Pengerang, have also been erected across the small Chinese-majority Kampung Sungai Rengit, the only village that has escaped the government’s relocation plans thus far.
According to rally organisers, the government has refused to acquire land from Kampung Sungai Rengit residents due to the high value of the commercial property here.
But a Pengerang PKR leader Taufik Jahir claimed the objective was to “force the villagers from their homes” as Kampung Sungai Rengit will turn into an island once all phases of the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex (PIPC) is completed in the years ahead.
RAPID is set to occupy over 6,424-acres of PIPC’s 22,500 acres, which is home to some 28,000 Pengerang parliamentary constituents in the southernmost tip of Johor. PIPC is a massive RM170 billion project that is expected to turn Malaysia into a mega petrochemical hub.
“Once they have been turned into an island, the Kampung Sungai Rengit property values will drop and the residents will be forced out, having lost their means of living,”

US president poll-Obama leading

Poll: Obama leads in Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania

President Barack Obama has stretched his lead over Republican nominee Mitt Romney in battleground states Ohio and Florida and retains a 14 point lead in Pennsylvania, according to a Quinnipiac University/New York Times/CBS poll released Wednesday.
The president is ahead 53 to 43 percent in Ohio and 53 to 44 percent in Florida according to surveys of likely voters conducted September 18-24. In Pennsylvania, Obama leads 54-42 percent.
Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, attributed the swing in Obama's favor to negative media coverage of Romney over the past few weeks but said the Republican nominee still has time to reverse the president's lead.
"Gov. Mitt Romney had a bad week in the media and it shows in these key swing states," Brown said. "The furor over his 47 percent remark almost certainly is a major factor in the roughly double-digit leads President Barack Obama has in Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The debates may be Romney's best chance to reverse the trend in his favor."
If national electorate models hold, Florida and Ohio will be crucial for Romney to reach the 270 electoral college votes needed to best Obama on Election Day. According to the Quinnipiac University poll, Romney continues to struggle with female voters, who favor Obama by 19 percentage points in Florida, 25 percentage points in Ohio and 21 percentage points in Pennsylvania, according to the poll. The surveys in Ohio and Pennsylvania have a margin of error of plus or minus 2.9 percent and plus or minus 2.8 percent in Florida.
Other recent polls, however, show closer races in these battleground states. A Mason-Dixon surveyunveiled Sunday and conducted Sept. 17-19 showed a statistical tie between Obama and Romney in Florida. According a recent Washington Post poll, Obama leads by eight percentage points in Ohio and four percentage points in Florida.

Man City and Everton suffer League Cup exits

Man City and Everton suffer League Cup exits

LONDON, Sept 26 — Premier League champions Manchester City and in-form Everton were both sent packing from the League Cup on Tuesday, their respective managers paying the price for making wholesale changes to their starting line-ups for the third round ties.
City lost 4-2 after extra-time to top flight rivals Aston Villa with a completely different team to the one that started the 1-1 draw against Arsenal on Sunday, while Everton made six changes and were beaten 2-1 by second tier Leeds United.
Chelsea also rung the changes but emphatically booked their place in the fourth round with a 6-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Stamford Bridge.
City's second-string team still included multi-million pound signings Carlos Tevez, Jack Rodwell, James Milner, Gareth Barry and Mario Balotelli.
The latter drilled home a low shot to give City the lead with his first club goal since March, before Villa levelled when their former midfielder Barry deflected the ball into his own net.
Aleksandar Kolarov whipped in a free kick to give City the advantage for the second time on 64 minutes but Gabriel Agbonlahor levelled five minutes later to force extra time.
Charles N'Zogbia pounced on a loose ball to make it 3-2 and Agbonlahor wrapped up the tie with the aid of a big deflection that caused his shot to loop over City keeper Costel Pantilimon.
"I'm disappointed for the result, Aston Villa are a good team but we didn't play well," City manager Mancini said.
"Our play is not quick, we want to take one touch too many, this is not good."
Everton manager David Moyes retained only Victor Anichebe, Seamus Coleman, Marouane Fellaini, Johnny Heitinga and Kevin Mirallas from the team that started the 3-0 win over Swansea City on Saturday.
The visitors had made a barnstorming start to the Premier League campaign, sitting third after five matches, but their new-look 11 were quickly under pressure at Elland Road.
They fell behind when Aidy White jinked his way through the heart of the visitors' defence and curled a shot into the top corner after four minutes.
Leeds doubled their lead when a Danny Pugh shot was prodded into the bottom corner by Rodolph Austin in the second half before Sylvain Distin headed in a late consolation.
"I didn't think there was a weakness tonight, I thought we deserved it and make no mistake they wanted this tonight, they wanted to win," Leeds manager Neil Warnock said on Sky Sports.
"We put our head and bodies on the line but you have to do that in the cup."
John Terry put his FA hearing into racially abusing Anton Ferdinand out of his mind to return to Chelsea's starting line-up having started on the bench for Saturday's Premier League clash against Stoke City.
It was Terry's central defensive partner, Gary Cahill, who broke the deadlock heading in a Juan Mata free kick after four minutes, before Ryan Bertrand stroked home from 10 metres and Mata effectively ended the contest scoring Chelsea's third with only 17 minutes on the clock.
A second-half penalty from Oriol Romeu made it four before Fernando Torres headed a fifth and Victor Moses wrapped up the tie by scoring his first Chelsea goal.
"If you show complacency and disrespect to the opposition you pay the price," Chelsea assistant coach Eddie Newton told reporters. "We focused on the game, dealt with the matters at hand and we got a very good result and performance."
Garry Monk scored in the 90th minute for Premier League Swansea City who came from 2-1 down late on to beat third tier Crawley 3-2, while Wigan Athletic won 4-1 in an all-Premier League encounter at West Ham United.
Sunderland were reduced to 10 men after midfielder Lee Catermole was sent off in the first half against third tier MK Dons but still won 2-0 thanks to a Craig Gardner free kick and a tight-angled finish from James McClean.

TOKYO 25 Sept.
- AFP

iPhone 5 Glitches, Secrets, and Scratches

iPhone 5 Glitches, Secrets, and Scratches Found Since Launch

PHOTO: Apple's iPhone 5.

Millions of people pulled their brand new iPhone 5s from its clean packaging this weekend, and while a new larger, lighter and faster phone greeted them, some also discovered some unadvertised features.
Within hours after it went on sale on Friday, many new iPhone 5 owners began reporting issues and secrets about their new phones.
Firstly, many Verizon iPhone owners were pleasantly surprised to find that their phones were able to work on AT&T's network. All they had to do was swap out the nano-SIM card in the new iPhone 5 for an AT&T SIM. In the past, Apple had been rigorous about limiting the phone to specific networks.
While most who buy the iPhone 5 from Verizon still have to agree to two years of service with the carrier, this means they won't have to buy a new phone if they want to switch after the contract expires. Verizon spokesperson Brenda Raney confirmed to ABC News that the phones were in fact "unlocked for 3G GSM roaming in the U.S."

However, other iPhone buyers weren't thrilled with another discovery: that the back aluminum plate on their phones was slightly scratched. "Just opened my iPhone 5. I have two nicks at the very top. Disappointed," a user wrote on Apple's support page.
Over the weekend many took to Twitter and Facebook and tech forum sites to share photos of very small nicks on the backs of their new phones. Under the hashtag #scuffgate, some shared photos and videos of the scratches. According to AllThingsD, Apple customer service has gotten many complaints about the issue since the launch.
Small software glitches have also been reported and have been detailed on Apple's support forum pages. Apple did not respond to ABC News' request for comment on the scratch issue.
Apple has faced criticism for glitches in its Map app in iOS 6. The new app, which replaces Google Maps, has misplaced some towns and displayed other geographic errors.
None of this is unusual for a product launch. When 5 million phones are sold within three days, they're bound to be intensely scrutinized.
"It is hard to explain this deep scrutiny and how Apple appears to be under the microscope, and in fact Apple products being under the microscope -- literally to see if they are scratched," Michael Gartenberg, Gartner Research Director, told ABC News.
"It goes to show the overall consumer fascination with Apple and why their products continue to sell very, very well. It seems everything the company does will be analyzed, scrutinized, and talked about to death."

First Tatooed President

The Tattooed Body Politic: Czech Aims to Be First Tatooed President

PHOTO: Vladimir Franz

Vladimir Franz, 53, is a Czech drama professor, a talented painter and a prolific opera and theater composer. But Franz wants to move out of the arts and into politics. If he can win his longshot bid to become president of the Czech Republic, he'd go down in history as the world's first head of state with a fully tattooed head.
Franz has tattoos covering 90 percent of his body, a variety of body piercings and dyed, blue hair.
Franz' presidential bid aims to oust Vaclav Klaus, the sitting president of the Czech Republic since 2003. He is not only running as an oddity but as an independent whose political views are far less extreme than his looks.According to the Daily Mail, Franz' "politics are moderate, promoting tolerance, human rights, democracy and encouraging the search for alternative energy sources."
Get more pure politics at ABCNews.com/Politics and a lighter take on the news at OTUSNews.com
Though many think that the campaign of this unlikely candidate is a joke, Franz assures them that it is not. He is charging full force ahead with his campaign, travelling across the Eastern European country collecting the 50,000 signatures required to run for office.
And people seem to be taking to the campaign as Franz collected almost 8,800 signatures during his first weekend of campaigning.
Though he is new to politics, Franz has already assimilated into the life of a politician, utilizing social networking sites, like Facebook where he has well over 25,000 followers. A Facebook photo posted to his page even snaps a photo of him holding a baby in true political fashion.
The striking candidate is the living example of not judging a book by its cover or a candidate by his ink.
Franz, whose intimidating image may be off-putting to some, graduated from law school and got a doctorate in the field of law. Franz never pursued a career in law, rather he dedicated his life to the arts--in more than one sense of the word.
