"Ikutkan hati ingin guna jalan darat namun apakan daya, jalan raya terlalu teruk sehingga tiada teksi atau bas sanggup masuk kecuali prebet," katanya

European businesses grin and bear it in slowing China

European businesses grin and bear it in slowing China

BEIJING, May 30 — European companies see China as the one bright spot in a gloomy world economy, even as they grapple with the country’s slowing economic growth, rising labour
China’s economy has slowed as export growth stalls in the face of weak global demand. Yesterday both the IMF and OECD cut their growth forecasts for China, and some economists say China could miss its own 7.5 per cent growth target this year.
“Despite many of the lowest business confidence results since the onset of the global economic downturn, it is clear that China is still being perceived as the best of a challenging global situation,” the annual report from the European Chamber of Commerce in China said.
“European companies are resigning themselves to this reality and remain committed to the Chinese market.”
Fewer companies in the survey reported profit or revenue increases in 2012, and the ratio of companies reporting losses doubled. Sixteen per cent of companies surveyed said their revenues fell, compared with just 6 per cent in 2011.
The reasons cited included higher labour costs, increased competition and a difficult regulatory environment, as well as macroeconomic conditions in China and abroad, the survey said.
Davide Cucino, the chamber’s president, told a separate briefing that members conservatively estimated they lost a collective €17.5 billion (RM70 billion) in revenue last year because of market access difficulties.
“It is not an issue of lack of opportunities, it is an issue of offering those opportunities in an equal way to everybody,” he said. He did not give specific details.
About a third of companies said lower domestic demand was also hurting net profit margins.
While some 70 per cent said they were optimistic about their business sector in the next two years, that was the lowest level of optimism since 2009.
Still, 94 per cent of companies said China was either increasingly important or as important as before for their global strategies, and 84 per cent said they were considering expanding their current operations. — R

Tornado

Many children among 91 feared dead in tornado-hit Oklahoma

May 21, 2013
Heaps of junk in the wake of the tornado that struck Moore. — Reuters picsMOORE, Oklahoma, May 21 — At least 91 people, including 20 children, were feared killed when a 3.2km-wide tornado tore through an Oklahoma City suburb, trapping victims beneath the rubble as one elementary school took a direct hit and another was destroyed.
President Barack Obama declared a major disaster area in Oklahoma, ordering federal aid to supplement state and local efforts in Moore after the deadliest US tornado since one killed 161 people in Joplin, Missouri, two years ago.
Emergency crews were desperately searching the wreckage of Plaza Towers Elementary School that took a direct hit from the tornado yesterday afternoon, Oklahoma Lieutenant Governor Todd Lamb told CNN.
There was an outpouring of grief on the school’s Facebook page, with messages from around the country including one pleading simply: “Please find those little children.”
Another elementary school, homes and a hospital were among the buildings levelled, leaving residents of the town of about 50,000 people stunned at the devastation and loss of life.
The Oklahoma medical examiner said 20 of the 91 expected to have been killed were children. The office had already confirmed 51 dead and had been told by emergency services to expect 40 more bodies found in the debris, but had not yet received them.
At least 60 of the 240 people injured were children, area hospitals said.
“We thought we died because we were inside the cellar door ... It ripped open the door and just glass and debris started slamming on us and we thought we were dead to be honest,” Ricky Stover said while surveying the devastated remains of his home.
Residents step over electric wires as they return to assess the damage.Moore was devastated with debris everywhere, street signs gone, lights out, houses destroyed and vehicles tossed about as if they were toys.
Rescuers were searching for survivors throughout the swath of devastation into the early hours of today, while the dangerous storm system threatened several southern Plains states with more twisters. Severe weather was expected through the night from the Great Lakes south to Texas.
Storm alerts
Speaking outside Norman Regional Hospital Ninia Lay, 48, said she huddled in a closet through two storm alerts and the tornado hit on the third.
“I was hiding in the closet and I heard something like a train coming,” she said under skies still flashing with lightning. The house was flattened and Lay was buried in the rubble for two hours until her husband Kevin, 50, and rescuers dug her out.
“I thank God for my cell phone, I called me husband for help.”
Her daughter Catherine, seven, a first-grader at Plaza Towers Elementary School, took shelter with classmates and teachers in a bathroom when the tornado hit and destroyed the school. She escaped with scrapes and cuts.
The National Weather Service assigned the twister a preliminary ranking of EF4 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, meaning the second most powerful category of tornado with winds up to 320 km/h.
Witnesses said yesterday’s tornado appeared more fierce than the giant twister that was among the dozens that tore up the area on May 3, 1999, killing more than 40 people and destroying thousands of homes. That tornado ranked as an EF5, meaning it had winds over 320 km/h.
The 1999 event in Oklahoma ranks as the third-costliest tornado in US history, having caused more than US$1 billion (RM3 billion) in damage at the time, or more than US$1.3 billion in today’s dollars. Only the devastating Joplin and Tuscaloosa tornadoes in 2011 were more costly.
School destroyed
The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center provided the town with a warning 16 minutes before the tornado touched down at 3:01pm (2001 GMT), which is more than the average eight to 10 minutes of warning, said Keli Pirtle, a spokeswoman for the centre in Norman, Oklahoma.
The notice was upgraded to emergency warning with “heightened language” at 2:56pm, or five minutes before the tornado touched down, Pirtle said.
Television media measured the tornado at more than 3km wide, with images showing entire neighbourhoods flattened.
A woman (centre) lost in the destruction. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed a temporary flight restriction that allowed only relief aircraft in the area, saying it was at the request of police who needed quiet to search for buried survivors.
Oklahoma activated the National Guard, and the US Federal Emergency Management Agency activated teams to support recovery operations and coordinate responses for multiple agencies.
Briarwood Elementary School, which also stood in the storm’s path, was all but destroyed. On the first floor, sections of walls had been peeled away, giving clear views into the building; while in other areas, cars hurled by the storm winds were lodged in the walls.
Across the street, people picked through the remains of their homes.
The number of injured as reported by several hospitals rose rapidly throughout the afternoon.
Oklahoma University Medical Center alone was treating 65 patients, 45 of them children, though it was no longer expecting a further mass influx of casualties, spokesman Scott Coppenbarger said.
Moore Medical Center itself sustained significant damage.
“The whole city looks like a debris field,” Glenn Lewis, the mayor of Moore, told NBC.
“It looks like we have lost our hospital. I drove by there a while ago and it’s pretty much destroyed,” Lewis said.
The massive twister struck at the height of the tornado season, and more were forecast. On Sunday, tornadoes killed two people and injured 39 in Oklahoma. — Reutersat killed 161 people. — Reuters

New Malaysian home minister tells unhappy Malaysians to emigrate

(Straits Times, Singapore) - Malaysia's newly-appointed Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has reportedly said that Malaysians who are unhappy with the country's political system should leave the country, stressing that loyal citizens should respect the rule of law.
Malaysian news website fz.com reported on Thursday that in his first opinion piece printed in the Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia daily since receiving the portfolio on Wednesday, Mr Ahmad Zahid wrote that the illegal gatherings held across the country by opposition Pakatan Rakyat coalition was a form of escapism and the denial of the fact that it failed to take control of Putrajaya.
"Malaysia inherited the political system from the United Kingdom and many Commonwealth countries also use the first past the post system where political parties contesting in the election will only have one representative in each constituency with the principle of a simple majority of votes," he said in a column.
He said opposition leaders, especially those from Parti Keadilan Rakyat and the Democratic Action Party, had been "irresponsible" in confusing young Chinese voters and their followers who are "politically blind" to dress in black to protest against the result of the 13th general election which they believed went in their favour, going by the popular vote.

Kuala Lumpur: Pecutan maut.

Waythamoorthy big winner with government appointment

KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 – MIC is now facing competition from Hindraf as the voice of the Indian community in the Cabinet, following the unexpected appointment of the Indian rights NGO’s chairman to the new Barisan Nasional (BN) administration.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today announced that Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf)’s P. Waythamoorthy (picture) would be a deputy minister in the prime minister’s department.
Waythamoorthy’s appointment appears to be reward for his role in returning support for BN from Indians.

Alaska- Pavlof volcano

Second Alaska volcano belching ash and steam

May 16, 2013
Pavlof Volcano began erupting on Monday and was still belching clouds. – Reuters pic ANCHORAGE, May 16 — One of Alaska’s most active volcanoes has erupted with clouds of ash and steam, and lava is flowing down its snow-covered flank, scientists said yesterday.
Pavlof Volcano began erupting on Monday and was still belching clouds, the Alaska Volcano Observatory said.
It has been emitting occasional dark clouds of ash and steam rising up to 6,096 metres and drifting toward the northeast, the observatory said.
The 2,518-metre Pavlof joins Cleveland Volcano in the Aleutians, which has been erupting off and on since mid-summer 2011.
Pavlof, on the Alaska Peninsula, is 950 kilometres southwest of Anchorage. The closest communities are Cold Bay, home to about 100 people, and King Cove, population about 940.
Pavlof last erupted in 2007, but it has erupted at least 24 times between 1901 and 1996, the observatory said.
Ash from Pavlof and other Alaska volcanoes could pose a risk to air traffic. But as of Wednesday, there had been no flight problems reported, said John Power, scientist in charge at the observatory.
Like many of Alaska’s volcanoes, Pavlof lies along a major commercial airline route between Asia and North America. Generally, jets fly at about 9,150 metres, and Pavlof’s ash has not reached that level, according to observatory reports.
The lava flow poses a different risk.
“The concern is the hot lava melting large amounts of snow,” Power said, and the result could be mudslides.
For now, the volcano appears to be putting on a show for its neighbors.
Residents of Cold Bay, about 59 km southwest of Pavlof, have reported an incandescent glow at night at the volcano’s summit, Power said.
Meanwhile, Cleveland Volcano continues to emit heat signals, Power said. The last explosion at that 1,730-metre volcano was on May 6. – Reuters

Sesat dan menyesatkan

12 pengikut 'Tuhan Harun' diburu

Raflie Ab. Malik menunjukkan dokumen mengenai Azida Mohd.
Ketua Bahagian Penguat Kuasa Jabatan Agama Islam Pahang (JAIP), Raflie Ab.
Tirmizi Othman, 17, (Sungai Petani, Kedah); Mohamad Ghazali Fitri Mohd. Azam, 25, (Shah Alam); Norhairi Harun, 41, (Skudai, Johor); Norhafizah Mohd.

Manchester City drop Roberto Mancini

Roberto Mancini sacked by Manchester City as Pellegrini waits in wings

Speculation had heightened over Roberto Mancini's future at Manchester City even before the FA Cup final defeat. Photograph: Richard Sellers/Sportsphoto/Allstar
Roberto Mancini was finally sacked on Monday night as Manchester City manager, a year to the day after he led the club to a first championship in 44 years. The owners said the Italian's failure to meet any of his targets this season, with the exception of qualifying for the Champions League, had led to his dismissal.
The dramatic Sergio Agüero strike that won the title last May secured Mancini a lucrative five-year contract worth around £35m and a mandate to build City into an ongoing force. But 12 months on Mancini is unemployed, with the Abu Dhabi-led executive's decision to remove him coming after they allowed him to limp on when news broke on the eve of Saturday's FA Cup final with Wigan Athletic that they were in advanced discussions with Málaga's Manuel Pellegrini, who is almost certain to replace him.
Although on Monday morning Pellegrini denied he had reached an agreement with City, discussions between the club and his agent, Jesús Martínez, regarding financial terms and contractual clauses are at the stage where a deal is ready to be signed. This should now be a formality.
The Chilean is likely to start his new role at the turn of the month after City said the assistant manager Brian Kidd will "take interim responsibility for the remaining two games of the season and the post-season tour to the United States".
Until the announcement confirming Mancini's removal, posted on the club website at 10.22pm, City had not issued any public comment since indications began that the manager's job was in doubt. This had cast the Italian as an increasingly isolated figure, with it becoming a matter of when not if he would lose his job.
The statement said: "It is with regret that Manchester City football club announces that Roberto Mancini has been relieved of his duties as Manchester City manager. This has been a difficult decision for the owner, chairman and board to make and it is the outcome of a planned end-of-season review process that has been brought forward in light of recent speculation and out of respect for Roberto and his extensive contributions to the football club.
"Despite everyone's best efforts, the club has failed to achieve any of its stated targets this year, with the exception of qualification for next season's Uefa Champions League. This, combined with an identified need to develop a holistic approach to all aspects of football at the club, has meant that the decision has been taken to find a new manager for the 2013-14 season and beyond."
The reference to a "holistic approach" suggests a sea change in philosophy from top to bottom of the club, driven by the chief executive, Ferran Soriano, and Txiki Begiristain, the director of football. This may include playing 4-3-3 throughout the academy and in the first team. Following the removal of Mancini, who could be a divisive figure, there may also be a hope that the club will be more cohesive.
Khaldoon al-Mubarak, the chairman, said: "Roberto's record speaks for itself and he has the respect and gratitude of Sheikh Mansour [the owner], myself and the board for all of his hard work and commitment over the last three and a half years. He has clearly also secured the love and respect of our fans. He has done as he promised and delivered silverware and success, breaking the club's 35-year trophy drought [winning the 2011 Cup] and securing the title in 2012. I would like to personally and publicly thank him for his dedication to the progress that he has overseen and for his support and continued friendship."
Before the club's pursuit of Pellegrini emerged, the plan was for Mancini to end the season and have a review in the emirate. This would have been led by Mubarak and included Soriano and Begiristain.
Mubarak and his team were adamant that if it were decided to let Mancini go, there should be a candidate in place who had agreed terms and would be ready to take over. This was the strategy under which Pellegrini was approached.
With regard to Mancini's position being all but untenable before he was removed, City were in precisely the same position when he became manager in 2009. Then, it was common knowledge that he would supersede the incumbent, Mark Hughes as the Welshman took charge of the club's match with Sunderland on 19 December. Following a 4-3 win, Hughes was sacked.
City intend to make cuts lower down the club, too, with an extensive sacking programme. Soriano and Begiristain have decided the faults in the existing coaching staff go all the way to youth level and will make their point ruthlessly.
